Update 5 on Hurricane Milton – late morning on Thursday, Oct 10, 2024

We have now received first information from our team directly in Cape Coral. It appears that the damage is not as severe as feared. From two of our vacation homes, we already know that there was no damage. For almost all our other homes, we suspect that there is also no or only very little damage and no or only minimum flooding.

The water does not seem to have risen significantly, so in most cases, it did not flow into the pool or the house. However, these are just initial impressions from individual neighborhoods. Throughout Thursday, we will try to inspect all the houses, take pictures, and inform the owners. Guests will also be informed as quickly as possible. This includes both guests who are already in Florida as well as those traveling in the coming days and weeks.

Roads, bridges, etc., are likely to be minimally affected and accordingly passable. However, this can still be dangerous, as objects or power lines may be lying on the roads. Additionally, too much traffic hinders repair and cleanup efforts. Local news stations indicate that Sanibel, Fort Myers Beach, Fort Myers, and Captiva were more heavily affected than Cape Coral, but it is in no way comparable to Hurricane Ian.

Sheriff Carmine Marceno just said on the news that the emergency calls they received were much less compared to hurricane Ian in 2022. There were also almost no “urgent” emergency calls.

Power outages in Cape Coral (only LCEC): currently just over 80,000. MANY areas do not have power, same with the Seabim vacation homes.

Please note that these are only initial impressions and things could ultimately look different. Additionally, neighborhoods or homes may be affected differently. Overall, it can be stated that Lee County and Cape Coral have weathered Hurricane Milton quite well. Cleanup efforts have already begun and are in full force. We are optimistic that in 2-3 days, Lee County will look different again. Stay tuned …
